1. Week 9 Overview: Populations
Week 9 Learning Content
Population-based approaches which seek to improve health are not necessarily about targeting ‘high-risk’ groups. Rather, this approach acknowledges the need to understand unique circumstances which shape the health of different populations and to work with these populations and support them achieve high quality of life on their terms. Understanding and ultimately improving a population's health rest not only on understanding this population perspective but also on understanding the ecology of health & the interconnectedness of the biological, behavioural, physical, and socio-environmental domains.
Week 9 learning outcomes:
- Understand the need to focus on populations of interest
- Understand health related behaviour/risk taking among populations and the link to health (e.g., emerging adults, First Peoples)
- Understand the idea of risk and associated factors
- Understand some of the reasons (SDoH) why these populations engage in risk/unhealthy lifestyle behaviours
2. 9.1 Cultural Determinants of Health
9.1 Learning Content
This week's Learning Content will discuss how culture impacts health, with a strong focus on Australia's First People's health.
Who We Are: Country/Place
3. 9.2 Youth Risk
9.2 Learning Content
It is important to focus on young people's health because this is a critical period when many important modifiable health risk factors for later life either emerge or accelerate. Many adolescents do die prematurely due to preventable issues (accidents, suicide, violence, pregnancy related complications and other illnesses that are either preventable or treatable). In fact, nearly 35% of the global burden of disease has roots in adolescence that can lead to illness or premature death later in life. This is also commonly when mental disorders may arise, particularly anxiety and depression, body image concerns. Therefore, we should be focusing on education and mental health in adolescence and emerging adulthood, instead of casting their issues aside because we assume they are "young and healthy".
