Learning content

1. Nutrition, Lifestyle, and Health

7.1 Learning Content

Many determinants of chronic disease are rooted in nutrition - largely due to education and lifestyle choices. Unfortunately, nutrition education is typically not prioritised in the Australian school system, which results in poor diet habits. This week, we will look at some of the basics of nutrition and the link lifestyle to chronic diseases, discuss "nutrition literacy", and look into Australian nutrition statistics & current research.

7.1 learning outcomes:

  1. Understand the different types of nutrients
  2. The link between nutrition and chronic disease
  3. What is nutrition literacy
  4. Australian nutrition statistics
  5. Understand current research in nutrition & chronic disease

Key concepts:

  • Chronic disease associated with high intakes of saturated fat, sugar, salt and low intakes of fruits, vegetables, wholegrain cereals
  • Dietary guidelines for Australians recommend consumption of a wide variety of nutritious foods
  • High levels of nutrition noise – need to have better nutrition and health literacy to navigate
  • Majority of Australians have less than adequate health literacy levels
  • Diets high in plant sources may be the key to long-term health and is associated with lower risk of all cause mortality

Optimal diet = adequate supply of required nutrients for tissue maintenance, repair, growth

BMI limitations

: ethnic groups, older, elite sports people, cannot distinguish muscle and fat

Waist to hip circumference ratio

: Measures abdominal (visceral fat), Highly correlated with chronic disease, better measurement for determining risks related to obesity

Adults 2/3

Children 1/4

Carb : 45-65

Fat : 20-35

Protein : 15-25

Sodium : less than 2300mg

Alchol : 0

Alchol : 4

Sodium : 2721mg

35% of Total energy consumed fom discretionary food

Less than 4% consume recommended intakes of veggies

only 31% consume recommended intakes of fruit

Soft drinks (29%) Alchol (25%)

2. Weight Stigma, Food and Social Determinants, & Obesogenic Environment

 7.2 Learning Content

"The social conditions in which people are born, live and work is the single most important determinant of good health or ill health" - WHO. It is important to understand that our both our social and built environments plays a large part in our nutrition choices and diet. Examples we will be looking into further are things like food swamps, weight stigma, and obesogenic environments.

7.2 learning outcomes:
  1. What is weight stigma
  2. Describe the link between food and social determinants of health
  3. Understand how environmental factors shape food choices (e.g., physical activity & food swamps)
  4. What is an obesogenic environment
  • After this Learning Content, can you see how excessive weight is a complex issue? How does weight stigma play into this?
  • What types of environments affect nutrition and diet? What are some examples?

3. Physical Activity, Lifestyle, and Health

7.3 Learning Content

We will wrap up this week by discussing the link between physical exercise and chronic disease.

7.3 learning outcomes:

•Define terms related to the study of physical activity and health
•Recall current PA guidelines
•Critique popular representations of PA and health knowledge
•Recognise the complexity in knowledge in PA and health/chronic disease
•Discuss trends in PA participation
•Apply evidence to public health/clinical professional settings

Concept check:

•Getting terms right is important
-HEPA vs PA vs exercise
•Australian PA guidelines
-Any physical activity is better than none
-Greatest public health benefit is in getting those who do nothing, to do something
•PA is good for health but…
-Independent of body weight (PA is good for health regardless of weight loss)
-We may have to do more than recommended amounts to prevent cancer
•PA trends are complex
-Many social and environmental determinants
-It’s not just about personal choice

Colon cancer, breast cancer moderately strong reduction

Other cancer weaker inconsistent

1. Audit-C

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Concise (AUDIT-C) is a brief alcohol screening instrument that reliably identifies persons who are hazardous drinkers or have active alcohol use disorders (including alcohol abuse or dependence). The AUDIT-C is a modified version of the 10 question AUDIT instrument.

The AUDIT-C has 3 questions and is scored on a scale of 0-12. Each AUDIT-C question has 5 answer choices valued from 0 points to 4 points. In men, a score of 4 or more is considered positive, optimal for identifying hazardous drinking or active alcohol use disorders. In women, a score of 3 or more is considered positive. Generally the higher the score, the more likely it is that a person's drinking is affecting his or her safety.
