Learning contents

1. The Social Determinants of Health

  1. Define "social determinant"
  2. Understand the link between social determinants and human health
  3. Understand the interconnectedness of social determinants

3 recommendations by CSDH to improve SDoHs

1) improve daily living conditions

2) tackle the inequitable distribution of power, money and resources

3) measure and understand the problem and assess the impact of action

Key concepts:

  • Addressing SDoH helps to elucidate the causes of disease/loss in health in our society

For example, we can continue to only treat the rising burden of diabetes and heart disease (which of course is still an important social investment).

OR

We can also address issues such as:

•The lack of education around prevention
•Rising mental health burden caused by economic and social hardships and
•Tackle unaffordable housing and health care
 
  • This approach to addressing SDoH is called "looking upstream". By finding the root cause of disease we can have:
•Downstream advantages
•Less health care needs/reduce burden

 

 

2. Examples of SDoH and Health Outcomes

<Access to health services>

accessability (location/space), appropiate (fit with need), affordable (cost)

The 12 SDoH for this course:

•Gender (not sex)
•Ethnicity
•Religion
•Minority group membership (e.g., linked with sexuality)
•Education
•Employment and occupation
•Income
•Social support including family
•Community resources
•Living conditions - housing
•Access to health services
