Who am I ?

NATIONALITY: A girl from a loving family in South Korea.
I was born and raised in South Korea for over 20 years, so my cultural identity is deeply rooted in South Korea. 
And I also think family affects a lot in forming one's personality. I believe that my parents, sister, and brother gave me immense love to be myself right now.

 

MAJOR: Being interested in both Design and Science.
I studied math and science intensively throughout high school but changed my mind to major in a design course at university at the last minute. After spending a couple of years as a design course student, I chose to learn more scientific and specialized knowledge studies.

 

LEISURE: Enjoying drinking tea and yoga listening to music, and calming mood.
As I have a temper and a hasty personality, I felt healed when I drink tea and do yoga. 

 

Cultural competency

Cultural competency is the ideal goal that we would reach for being compatible with others from different cultures.
According to the video above, cultural competency requires us to learn about other cultures so that we can adapt our behaviors and communication styles when we interact with others. Also when there's bias arising in our minds, we should control them. 

Cultural competency is too ideal that people hardly acquire it. They can not learn about all different cultures. They cannot be a chameleon all the time. So cultural competency is a more theoretical thing like a textbook that shows people what attitude they should aim at when confronting people from different cultures.

 

cultural humility

Cultural humility is the actual position that people take when they recognize cultural competency in different cultures. From the video, people with cultural humility recognize that no culture is superior to others and learn about different cultures by engaging in self-reflection and being honest about when they are not sure about something.

Cultural humility is the process that they can take to reach the goal of cultural competency. We all know that the best is possessing cultural competency but it is almost impossible to reach that level of it. So to summarize, Cultural humility is the process to reach cultural competency and it is the practical mindset we should own.
