Crude health indicators
-maternal mortality : during and following pregnancy and childbirth -> most are preventable and treatable but inequality over the world is reflected between rich countries and poor
-Infant and child mortality : Infant mortality rate (IMR) is death per 1000 live births of children (under 1 year/ under 5years for child mortality)
-the size of population
-fertility levels : total number of children that would be born to each women if she were to live to the end of her child-bearing years and give birth to children in alignment with the prevailing age-specific fertility rates
-life expectancy

Malnutrition is an umbrella term for poor nutrition, whether that is excess consumption of nutrients (overnutrition) or inadequate consumption or absorption of one or more nutrients (undernutrition). The three broad groups of conditions under the term ‘malnutrition’ are:
- undernutrition
-micronutrient-related malnutrition (e.g. lack of vitamins); and
-overnutrition, which can lead to obesity and diet-related diseases (such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer).
